Manipulating Preexisting Album Art.

i took an album by the gothic, melodic rock band evanescence and manipulated it using photoshop.
i started by drawing around the face on a fresh layer. i then used varous methods to fill in the image. the first procees was relativly time consuming. the main reason for this was to insure the fine detail of the eyes and hair was done to a high standard.

i started by opening a scanned image of the album artwork into phtoshop. I then proceeded to create a new layer. on the layer i used the paint brush tool to draw around  the face of Amy Lee the reason why i decided to create a pop art image this way was to allow myself more choice in what the shape the facial features would be. once i had the overall outline i then painted in a small section around the outline to insure that the final result would be of a high quality i also painted in the facial features before using the pollygonal lasso tool to fill in the majority of the hair sections. once i was happy with the black parts of the image i then proceeded to create another. i then selected a colour that complemented the music within the album. within a song on the album the words 'purple sky' are mentioned. i decided to use purples for the bulk of the image. to create the background i just painted over the areas that i needed to.  i created a new layer so that i could move the black layer above the coloured layers. so it doesnt really matter if i dont apply coulourr to the whole background. i decided to create a new layer for each colour in order to make it easier to change if i wasnt content with the overall colours when the image was complete.

to create this image i opened a document and altered the size to 25cm x 25cm with a resolution of 300 dots per inch. on this docement i opened the above image and inserted it as a new layer. then i used a keyboard shortcut to select the image inorder to resize the image. ( Ctrl + T  then held Shift as i moved the image. by using the shift key it ensures that the image doesn't distort~). when i was happy with the size of the image i moved it into the top left hand corner. I then selected image > Agustments > hue and saturation and altered the hue of the image to create the pink face with the red backgound. while i had this window up i moved the slider for the saturation on to max to insure that the colours are the brightest that is possible. i then repeated the process changing the position and colour of the image. i decided to use this style of imagery to mimic the combined work of Andy Warhol and  Julian Opie. Andy warhol is instantly noticable for his pop art style where as julian opie is most known for creating the iconic blur album art.

i decided to combine both styles shown in the album covers and create my own version of it using Evanescence as the main focus point. i think that the album design would be of a sutiable standard to be sold in a shop mainly because of the bold colours i have chosen added with the stlye of music the band creates and the types of album art other bands of similar stance create, combines to create an album art that will stand out from the other darker steriotypically 'rock and metal' album art.
